MBK: IUPUI Coach, Players Will Take Shoes To Peru

A Follow up to IUPUI Head Coach's Ron Hunter and the Samaritan's Feet charity he talked about on The Show: With Greg Kampe.

"INDIANAPOLIS(AP) IUPUI basketball coach Ron Hunter, who went barefoot for a game last season, won't be able to deliver shoes to the poor in Nigeria this month because the U.S. State Department said it wouldn't be safe to go.

Instead, Hunter said his group will travel to Lima, Peru, on Thursday to deliver about 15,000 pairs of shoes.

Originally, a group of about 40 people from IUPUI and Samaritan's Feet, a charitable organization based in Charlotte, N.C., planned to deliver shoes and visit orphanages, schools and hospitals in Nigeria. Hunter and some of his players also planned to hold basketball clinics.

The shoes made it across the Atlantic Ocean, but the group won't. Samaritan's Feet spokesman Todd Melloh said Tuesday that the State Department contacted the charity to say the trip might be a bad idea.

The State Department Web site has a travel warning against going to the West African nation, saying unusually high levels of violence and crimes are committed there by police, militias and ordinary citizens.

``Nigeria has an unsettled situation,'' Melloh said. ``They (the State Department) intercepted communication that it was not going to be positive for our trip. It was almost like they were waiting for us.''" Read More

But the former Lake Orion basketball star got a surprise when he told people he would play at Oakland University.

"Up north people are already talking about, 'You've got that class coming in from Oakland,' " Maynard said. "I said, 'How do you know about that?' But word gets around."" Read More Detroit Free Press

Hockey Broadcast test a success! D III and U. of Windsor

We tested out our 2008-2009 OU Hockey Broadcast today and it was a success, sounded good to. To listen to a game you will go here Then you will see a icon on the left called YouCastr It looks like this below:

Then you will click on Oakland and it will take you to the broadcast page when we are on live it will say listen here live on the page after you have clicked on the below box.

We also tested out adding in pre-recorded interviews with our recorder (we just had some nat sound of people talking a real interview will sound nice) and it works as well so we will try and get more of that for you.

From what I understand it will automatically record the games for us.

Regarding the game in Windsor, I talked to the staff at Windsor Athletics and for hockey they are playing in a "new" barn at least for Windsor next year so they are not 100% sure of the setup but we will be there if we have to use or own internet it won't be a live broadcast as of now because of how we would be charged because its in Canada. We are working to get an internet connection there to do it live.

It seems like the season is so far away but we are about 10 weeks away and for our planning purposes its crunchtime. As once we hit the Sept. Tryouts our focus will turn to getting all the music done, conduct interviews for the season preview we hope to do and more!

We are also working on trying to get DIII a broadcaster we have a few interested people so I will begin talkin to then in the next week or so.

ah yes

Havent written here in a while. WXOU Sports is busy at redoing our Basketball Sports Presentation. How we do things the feel ect. We are looking at ways we can do more Hopefully that goes well. Other than that pretty quiet.

I have received from everyone regarding "The All Time Oakland University Hockey Team" early entries I guess you can call it. I just realized it will be tougher then I thought to narrow it down. Luckly we have good people to help. You see names on the list and say wow I didn't think of that but I see why. I'm going to write my list down soon and compile then an we will all go from there.
