Hockey Team Needs a Bus?

PLYMOUTH'S NEW BUS GIVES WHALERS A WINNING LOOK

"One of the real pleasant surprises of the Whalers early season had nothing to do with wins and losses on the ice.

It had everything to do with how the Whalers travel around the Ontario Hockey League.

New corporate sponsor Bianco Tours equipped one of their buses in Plymouth Whalers colors and wrapping on the outside, along with wi-fi and satellite capabilities on the inside.

None of the Plymouth players were told about the new bus and saw it for the first time about an hour before leaving for Kitchener for the season opener on September 19." Read More Here

MATT MILLEN RELIEVED OF DUTIES AS LIONS PRESIDENT AND CEO

Official Press Release From Lions just released:

Allen Park, Mich.—Detroit Lions Owner and Chairman William Clay Ford announced today that Matt Millen has been relieved of his duties as President and CEO effective immediately.

Executive Vice President and COO Tom Lewand will now report directly to Mr. Ford on all business, organizational and NFL matters.

Martin Mayhew will assume the role of General Manager and report directly to Mr. Ford on all football matters. Additionally, Cedric Saunders has been named the Vice President of Football Operations.

“I have relieved Matt Millen of his duties effective immediately,” said Lions Owner and Chairman William Clay Ford. “I believe that this decision is in the best interest of this organization. I appreciate Matt’s efforts. Matt worked tirelessly during his tenure to win, and he would be the first one to tell you that you have to win in this league. It just didn’t work out.

“The support of our fans continues to be incredible and they deserve a winner. Every decision we make must focus on that goal, and I believe this decision today will allow this team to move forward in a positive manner.

“I am very disappointed with where we are as a team after our start this season. Our sole focus now is preparing for our next game against Chicago. The entire organization must work together and do whatever we can to make this a successful season. Despite our record, it is still early and there is time to turn this season around.

“These decisions are for the duration of the 2008 season. Once the season is over, we will undergo a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our entire football operation and put together a plan that we believe will transform this team into a winner.”

Oakland shows how to jump to D-I

"Northern Kentucky University is waiting for an NCAA Division I membership moratorium to end in 2011 before revisiting a potential move from Division II.

In the meantime, it can learn much from others that have already made the leap.

Take Oakland University. A decade ago, athletic director Tracy Huth said it was common for Michigan residents to assume students wearing Oakland shirts were from California." Read More from Shannon Russell

OU Men's Basketball Coach Greg Kampe writes about upcoming season.

"There is a lot optimism heading into the 2008-09 season. We are picked to be among the top contenders for the league title this season. We return all five starters back from a team that won 19 games and can boast one of the best recruiting classes in school history.

Those are facts that no one in the Summit League will particularly care about." Read More

Du up 3 to 1 over emu in the 3rd.no Adam Thomas again tonight for du joz in net. Schweiger for emu has scored all 4 emu goals this weekend du takin it to emu in the third right now. Brojek is good just got through on the emu broadcast talking about how hard his shot was from the point and bamn he scores his first goal as a panther 4 to 1 du also this dowell guy on du is good watch out 4 him. 5 to 1 du wins

Friday, September 19, 2008

Collar wins it!!!

Breakaway goal off emu turnover DU wins 4-3 in OT!

52-25 shots for DU

Penalties are crazy

3-3 2:43 left in the game if the penalties today called are a league wide thing then Oakland better be very careful next weekend because its out of control.....

The are also very quick on the trigger for ejections and misconducts tonight

50-25 shots for DU

36 seconds left DU on the PP coach Lowden just called a timeout for DU play in the EMU Zone.

Du had plenty of chances to win it but we have overtime

DU is livid

Open net for DU, DU player hauled down to the left of the goal and DU's Brit Ouelette gets a penalty????? for his own player getting hauled down by EMU

They would of taken a 4-3 lead but its still 3-3

This is the reaction from the DU Bench ****************************************************************************************************************

cant put all the cuss words I just heard!

EMU PP

its 3-3 Coach Davis has called a timeout for EMU he knows his team can win it here and he knows they have no business being tied 3-3 with DU.

Oh well that didnt work for EMU

Shots are 46-24 for DU

Gadwa Scores!

Rick Gadwa just tied it up on the next shot 3-3 must of been my pregame talk to him...then Joz makes another great save!

3-2 EMU

Joz just let in a really bad goal Joe Schweiger gets the hat trick for EMU 45 seconds into the third period. I'm not sure Joz knew the period started cause he does not let in goals like that.

@ EMU-Davenport Game now

The ACHA is back I'm currently @ EMU where they are hosting the defending DII National Champion Davenport Panthers.

EMU jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Davenport Dominated and still are. the shots are 39-20 for DU in the second intermission and we are in a 2-2 tie.

DU has had all kinds of chances and honestly it looks like EMU is on their heels in this game, always playing defensive. DU is always in the EMU zone generating chances.

Also DU goalie Eddie Wheeler was ejected in the second period for headbutting! EMU's backup goalie Craig Haa came off the bench and made his way toward Wheeler but didn't get close and pretended he was stretching when everyone "erupted" thinking they were going to see something more!

Chris Joswiak has come in net for DU and made an outstanding save on an EMU forward coming in on a breakaway.

Right now no reason DU is tied with EMU they can easily have 6 or 7 now. They are getting the puck on the post, near the redline, in the goal mouth and its not going in.

Weekend Games

We will be starting our ACHA season this weekend as we will be checking out the EMU-Davenport weekend series on Friday at Eastern and Saturday at Davenport.

We have started our season preview for the most part the new guys have been good to work with so far. Some have told us it was the first time they were interviewed so they were a little nervous. You will be hearing those during the broadcast and some online in the next few weeks.

OU Hockey Announces 2008-2009 Roster

- From www.oaklandhockey.org

"Last season brought many changes to the OU Hockey landscape. OU graduated a core group of players who appeared in four straight ACHA National Championship games, winning three National Titles in that span. With a new look lineup last season that included 14 new names on the roster the Grizzlies would skate to a record of 23-12-0 and appear in their 9th straight ACHA National Championship tournament. With a solid core returning for the 2008-2009 campaign, including last year’s OU Hockey Rookie of the Year Kevin Kranker and senior defenseman Jarrett Samp, the Grizzlies will be looking to return to the top of the American Collegiate Hockey Association.

Forwards
(Returning 8, Lost 2, 7 Newcomers)
Kevin Kranker leads all returning scorers after an impressive freshman campaign that saw him score 29 points in 34 games. The Grizzlies return two seniors upfront with Scott McGillvray and John Parrish. Parrish scored 17 points last season on 7 goals and 10 assists, while McGillvray netted 3 points after appearing in 25 games. The OU Hockey program returns four juniors, each looking to have a breakout season. Brett Haugh, Chris Leja, and Kyle McMahon all spent their freshman campaigns on the OU Hockey DIII squad. Haugh put up impressive numbers with the ACHA Division I team last season recording 19 points in 32 games. Kyle McMahon and Chris Leja each bring a hard working attitude to the rink each night and both put up 8 points last season. After completing one season at NCAA Division III UMASS-Boston, Cody Austin joined the Grizzlies for the second half of the 07-08 season. A two-way player, Austin scored 5 points in 16 games as a Grizzlie. Jesse Worrell and Jim Moran are the lone returning sophomores. Worrell netted 14 goals last season and 20 points in 31 games. Moran spent the 07-08 season on the blue line but has made the transition to forward for the 2008 season and will see time at both defense and forward.
Seven talented new comers will join the OU offensive corps. Rick Delecke transfer to Oakland University from NCAA Northland College where he amassed 7 points in 25 games. Jordan MacDonald comes to OU after a successful campaign with the Metro Jets of the CSHL. Joe Guenther last played for the Marquette Rangers in the NAHL. Mike Murray joins the Grizzlies from the NAHL Champion St. Louis Bandits. Thomas Mullen is a rugged forward who played for Detroit Catholic Central. Brandon Johnson played last season for Notre Dame Prep in the MHSAA. Adam Hoffa brings a hard-nosed style of play to the rink and last played for the Flint Generals in the Central States Hockey League.

Defense
(Returning 4, Lost 2, Newcomers 3)
OU returns four players on the back line including two seniors in Jarrett Samp and Nick Ranck. Samp is coming off his most impressive season after netting 23 points on 10 goals and 13 assists. Ranck returns as a solid presence on the back line, garnering 18 points in his three seasons with the Grizzlies. Dennis Capa and Collin Ronayne both return for their sophomore campaigns. Ronyane is a big rugged defenseman checking in at 6’4 and 225 lbs. Dennis Capa provides a sparkplug style of play on the blue line and netted 7 points in his rookie season.
Oakland University Hockey will see three new faces on the blue line this season. Brandon Jacobs joins OU from the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies Midget AAA program. Brandon Krefski last patrolled the blue line for Orchard Lake St. Mary’ and Kyle Stansik comes to Oakland via the Victory Honda Midget AAA team.

Goaltenders
(Returning 2, Lost 1, Newcomers 1)
OU returns two goaltenders and one talented newcomer. Collin Chase is entering his junior year between the pipes after leading OU to the ACHA Division I National Championship his freshman season and again playing over 1300 minutes in his sophomore season. Andrew Stewart returns to the Grizzlies after appearing in 5 games last season. Newcomer Alex Pikunas comes to Oakland University after a stellar season between the pipes for the Metro Jets in which he played in 45 games and posted a 89% save percentage. All three OU goaltenders will be pushing for playing time between the pipes."

Illinois Hockey at home

A conversation last night got me to look up Illinois Hockey record at home.

The last time Illinois lost at home to an ACHA Team was 1/20/06 vs North Dakota State a 4-3 loss they have won 49 straight at home which will be 51 after they play Michigan State. I think its safe to put those two in the win column for Illinois, no disrespect to MSU at all by saying that. To be fair during that stretch they lost to the CSCHL All-Stars at home 6-4 on 2-24-07 but that doesn't really count in my opinion.

Remember they are on a 38 game win streak and if you believe they will beat MSU like it will be 40 straight wins going into the weekend series against Oakland. The last loss for Illinois was on 3/3/07 at the ACHA National Tournament against Oakland which was a 3-2 loss

Now Illinois fans are most likely looking at this years schedule and saying the first 16 at home are easy wins. In those 16 it looks like if anyone is going to beat them Oakland would have the best shot.

Since 2000-2001 Illinois is 146-10-4 at home. That says it all.

Brian Kilrea To Retire in Ottawa

"As expected, 67's coach/GM Brian Kilrea is relinquishing his duties as bench boss following this season. Kilrea will stay with the team as general manager, focusing primarily on scouting.

Assistant coach Chris Byrne will be elevated to head coach.

"I am going to miss it, no doubt," said Kilrea, who in 31 years with the 67's has established himself as the winningest coach in Canadian junior hockey history. "But it's time." Read More in the Ottawa Sun

My Pre-Season Rankings

I am on the Rankings committee at collegehockey.info along with a few other people. I have submitted my top 12 ACHA Pre-Season Rankings. Now they are going to combine all of our to come up with the rankings but I thought I would share mine.

1. Illinois
2. Lindenwood
3. Liberty
4. Penn State
5. Oklahoma
6. Rhode Island
7. Delaware
8. Ohio
9. Iowa State
10. Oakland
11. West Chester
12. Stony Brook

Some points in the end of the day I think Oakland is better then Iowa State if I could turn this in later after I know the full roster and not bits and pieces of who's new and who's going I believe I would Move Oakland to 9 based on what I know about who is coming in to Oakland. Now on the show I said OU should be 12 but when you look at it they are not worse then Stony Brook, West Chester (who I'm not sold on), Iowa State and possibly Ohio because I think they get overrated to much but that may be a stretch. I have a gut feeling its going to be a good year for the Grizzlies.

Now I know many will have Delaware higher then me but I may have them to high based on what I'm hearing out of UD how it may be a rebuilding year.
