OU Hockey Prospect Camp Thoughts
Thinking about our interview with Coach Schaeffler yesterday we kind of got an idea of what they are looking for maybe more of a recap but will add some things:
Coach Bachusz has some guys he was able to bring in that sounds promising knowing his background and hockey knowledge.
The conditioning and strength of the team will be much better so they can play a full 60 minutes at a high level.
No one from last season that can return has said 100% they are not coming back. You always hear chatter and some of the guys like to mess with us to. Coach also mentioned because of different commitments we can't really assume if they are not in this weekend that they are gone.
In Goal: Chase #1 then its up to how will Andrew Stewart play in the summer camps and how well will the other guys play. the #2 job won't be handed to him and it shouldn't but he will have the chance to earn it. Do I think he can? yep. Will he? Can't say for sure without seeing who else is there my gut feeling says he will. You need a guy who we can talk about pushing Chase for #1 and not pushing Stewart for #2. That would a win-win in my eyes and not a knock on either goalie.
On D: Samp, Yearego, Orlando are in Ronayne it depends on how he does Gordie was saying hes a great talent and I agree. They are looking for a 3 or 4 defender. I would think they have the top 4 in those guys above, but you never know who can bump them down. they are looking for that Scott Elder shot blocking defensive defenseman. They missed that when Elder was here after the game the goalies would say he blocked so many shots. I don't think I heard that once last year.
It's about helping the goalie and not leaving him out to dry.
The coaches were not happy giving up 3 goals a game, which means before you even drop the puck your asking your forwards to at least score 4 goals. I believe they will fix that part quick. The rest have to be the best out of the other group coming in. Defensive turnovers have to come way down I think. I don't have the numbers just a gut feeling.
On Forwards: This is the area that I'm the most worried about. We discussed after the interview who's team is this Kranker's? Is that fair for us to say now? We could say in the past it's Will's team, it's Cooper's team. I got the impression this is what concerns Gordie the most what I took out of the interview is that for scorers there is Kranker and then question marks. There is lots of competition here lots of chances for someone to step up and be the next top 6 forward.
They have one top 6 guy in Kranker I think they are 100% comfortable with. Someone in position in front of the net more, would be ideal in one of those spots. I noticed numerous times last season thinking if only someone was there it would of been an easy goal.
As we discussed I think Worrell or Haugh or maybe Austin could be one of those guys. I'm more then comfortable with Haugh in the top 6. Worrell shows flashes but he has to do it consistent enough.
Finally Special Teams can improve I think that on the Power Play you need to make teams pay more then happens not at least generate more chances, more puck cycling and shots.
Reading this will make you think this team blows but that is the farthest thing from the truth its a good team but they are making it into a great team again a top team.

Backup Goalie Position Offers Two Spots
With the first of three summer camps set to get underway this weekend at the ONYX Ice Arena, the Grizzlies have two spots open in goal. It is very unlikely that someone will come in and unseat Collin Chase, who is expected to once again to be the Grizzlies starting goaltender,
However, for the past several seasons the main backup to Chase has been Andrew Hansen, who departs the club after his senior season. Hansen was everything you could expect in a backup and more as you always felt you had as good a chance to win a game with either Chase or Hansen in net. Read More

In Ottawa
Shortly after the show last night we hit the road for the long drive to Ottawa for the NHL Draft. We are staying at the NHL Hotel.
I had hoped to post our file from the show here but the internet is weird at our hotel no wireless unless your in the lobby and its kind of a zoo at times down there with coaches, Prospects scouts and all the other media. So I am connected via a high speed line which I cannot upload to or else I would be hogging the net form Carl.
Our hotel is in downtown Ottawa skyscrapers surround us but off to our right is the river and Quebec.
It was interesting to hear see the atmosphere here in Ottawa very busy very much so. Lots of rumors going around as well. We are resting up and gearing up for a big event the league has planned for all of us folks tonight.

OU Basketball Forum
Grizzly Fans here is a place to talk to fellow OU Hoops fans about your Grizzlies
Dave Pemberton and OU Hoops
Our good buddy Dave Pemberton from the Oakland Press has started a blog and he discusses briefly picking Oakland Men's Basketball as #1 in his pre-season ballot.
A few post ago I discussed how many would pick OU as a favorite. I really don't want to directly say it now but how can you not? On paper and that is the key they look like this is the best shot to get back to the Tournament but I will try and wait until we see the full non-conference schedule and how that will shake out but how can you not be excited?
I think the biggest thing Coach Kampe is doing with his public comments is trying to calm the excitement over this team as it is only still on paper and not fair to expect greatness without being on the court yet and as Brad Doescher pointed out when I started to get excited on the show last week is that these guys are freshmen, but we are excited about how Kangas will be not injured, Stradt in the fold with another year and all the energy he brings D-Nelson as well and JJ dominating the Summit like we know he can. We believe they upgraded on what they lost.
Questions like Dave says in his blog how will the minutes be dished out? Can the team handle the pressure that is sure to follow? How will they respond to adversity? Will the recruits live up to the hype? Will they avoid let downs in the conference schedule? and finally how will they deal with ORU the defensing conference champs?
I think in the end they will be ok but I'm trying not to get ahead of myself. I have told some in private I think they will be damn good but like Dave I haven't seen these guys yet with ny own eyes so its based on reports, research and the typical things you do for new recruits like online video clips (but those can make anyone look good so you take it with a grain of salt)
Also we are working on getting Coach Kampe on, I saw him briefly at a golf outing and he said he would be happy to talk with us, so we are just trying to do the scheduling of that now through the proper channels.

Plymouth's AJ Jenks featured on NHL.com
"A.J. Jenks has the size and skill set to be a successful NHL player.
"He's a big guy, a hard-working guy, goes to the net, plays with a lot of energy," was the report from Central Scouting's Chris Edwards.
The one knock on Jenks, though, is bringing that same energy on a nightly basis.
"When he's playing a physical, aggressive, high-energy game, he's very effective," said Edwards. "When he's battling for pucks, winning battles, he's very effective. He produces points when he's doing that. When he's not doing that, he doesn't look good. He needs to play at a high energy, get involved, battle for pucks, because he's got good puck skills and playmaking ability. He needs to show that every night." Read More

IUPUI's Hill decides to stay in NBA draft
"George Hill sounded calm and confident Saturday afternoon after making the biggest decision of his life.
The IUPUI junior who initially put his name in the NBA draft to gauge the league's interest decided to forego his final year of college eligibility and enter professional basketball." Read More from the Indy Star
He was a big threat to OU getting back to the Tourney and helped to keep OU out of it this year so from that aspect it is good for OU. This move will no doubt make people think OU has an even better chance to make the Tourney but they still have to do it on the court.

Wright, Oakland like move
Detroit News article by Terry Foster about OU Hoops.
"Larry Wright wants to be closer to his mother, Karen. She lives in Saginaw and has had a series of back surgeries which have made life tough for her. It was difficult keeping tabs on her medical condition from St. John's University and he missed his home."

Kampe gets another one
"The Saginaw, Mich., native is transferring from St. John’s University.
ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University received more good news on Tuesday morning when St. John’s University guard Larry Wright (6-2/172) decided to come and play for the Golden Grizzlies, announced by men’s basketball coach Greg Kampe. Wright, an incoming junior from Saginaw, Mich., is the sixth and final player in this remarkable recruiting class for OU.
“In my 25 years of recruiting, on paper, this is the best recruiting class we have ever had and by far,” said Kampe. “We’re bringing in a player that started in the Big East, was the team’s third leading scorer, and had several double-digit scoring games for the Red Storm. Most of the time when you get transfers, they are leaving because they are unhappy with playing time, but he was getting all the playing time in the world, he just wanted to come home.”
Wright started in 10 of the 29 games he played in for St. John’s last season. He averaged 9.1 points per game and 1.3 rebounds per game. Wright finished with 15 assists and played in an average of 18.9 minutes per game. His top game came against South Florida where he poured in 17 points on 3-of-3 shooting from behind the arc. He also scored 15 points against nationally-ranked West Virginia and finished the season with 13 double-figure scoring games."

Also keep an eye out here as we head to Ottawa for the draft hopefully we can get some good stuff. Not to sure how its gonna go yet but we do have a schedule from the NHL including some decent events not sure what all we are doing in that regard yet..

WDIV's Katrina Hancock Interview with KDKA causing controversy
The following is a video of WDIV Sports Reporter Katrina Hancock with KDKA in Pittsburgh about Red Wings fans and it is not sitting well in Hockeytown. See for yourself. Also her contact info has been removed from the WDIV site (I won't post it here either) which would make one thing Red Wings fans are bombarding her with messages. I think if she thought that, with the internet as we know it,the video won't make it back here that was a mistake on her part. Also would be a mistake if she thought Wings fans would not react and would not be happy and spread this video and bombard her with messages.
To be fair she has a right to her opinion
The story as a whole KDKA piece is here Where they are wrong is on the ratings in Detroit which do not count all of us who watch on CBC instead of NBC. That hurts the NBC ratings in Detroit and in Pittsburgh where they don't have a choice like we do here. (Note: JoeVision even shows CBC instead of NBC)

We also have our Agenda for the NHL Draft in Ottawa and wow is all I can say. We hope to file a few good reports for you as well!
Then When we get back its quickly off to Oakland University Hockey Camp to check out some of the possible new talent or running the score clock!

Breaking News:Oakland Adds Ilija Milutinovic to Top OU Recruiting Class
It's Finally Official.... Brad and myself have been dancing around this one for a long time on "The OU Basketball Show" Saying things like "Let's hope they get some big recruit" well folks here it is and his name to! I am very excited for the Men's Team next season. The schedule is tough from what we know.
"The Oakland University men’s basketball team continues to add to its already highly-touted 2008-09 recruiting class as Ilija Milutinovic (7-0, 255) has signed to play for the Golden Grizzlies next season, announced head coach Greg Kampe on Wednesday. The recruiting class is now up to five and has talented players at every position.
“Not only is this a significant recruit because not only is he potentially a great player, but if it works out for him at Oakland University then it opens the door for us to recruit internationally,” said Kampe. “There is a lot of hype with him and we have never had this much hype about a recruit before. He turned down six figures to play professionally in Serbia because he wants to go to the NBA." Read More

Joe Dumars Statement
“Decisions like this are difficult to make, especially with the success we have had throughout the last three regular-seasons,” Dumars said. “However, at this time, I feel it is necessary to make a change. I thank Flip for his hard work and dedication, but it is time for a new voice to lead our team.”- Joe Dumars
